There was a person standing by the dumpster. It was still enough that Ayda Mensah, laborer 2nd class, did a double-take, wondering whether she was looking at some weird mannequin.
Instincts told her to get the hell out and throw the trash out later, but because of that curiosity that never quite left her, despite everything, she took a couple more steps forward. It looked like a person, with skin, hair, and everything, but the stillness was not natural.
A SecUnit. Or a ComfortUnit. Left in the garbage.

Of course it didn’t respond. It was shut down, completely gone from the feed. The only thing alive about SecUnit right now was its organic tissue. Still, she couldn’t help but entertain the tiny shred of hope that if she called its name, it would open its eyes and look at her with that soft, world-weary expression it so often wore.

Convincing her was the hard part. The maintenance procedure would be easy and shouldn’t take more than two minutes.

Summary
Dr. Ayda Mensah wasn't supposed to be here. She had stepped in at the last minute to help. It should have been a standard, low-risk trip. That didn't stop SecUnit from finding out about it, and insisting on joining the team, stepping away from a mission with Perihelion to do so.
Concerns rise when Perihelion forwards an unprecedented High Alert warning from PSUMNT. SecUnit can't be two places at once, but it's already here. Thank goodness, because when the Genarrans demand Dr. Mensah choose a Champion, no one else from Preservation would stand a chance against the Genarran combatant.
The Ganarran Champion's identity raises more questions than answers. Mensah joins Murderbot when it must return to Perihelion, and it's going to take everyone to solve this problem and prevent a disaster.
(The first two chapters can be read as a stand alone, open-ended story.)
