Summary
Human, modern-ish AU for All Systems Red/the first season of the series.
MB is a "security guard" trapped in a predatory contract with the company. As it accompanies PresAux on an exploratory mission, things quickly begin to go wrong to a potentially lethal degree, and it needs to decide whether it wants to help them or follow orders to avoid making its already awful situation even worse.
I had to stand there and protect company property, loaned to this weird group of hippie scientists who were doing something with it, related to the soil or animals or whatever. I didn’t bother to read the brief, so that was the extent of what I knew. I had to make sure nobody got killed so that nobody else could cash the company insurance, that no equipment got destroyed, and that the building they set up in wasn’t set on fire. Seeing the eccentricity of the Preservation Auxiliary Exploration Division, I could clearly not rely on them not to do any of these things, so I was paying a slightly higher amount of attention than usual. My supervisor already didn’t like me, so anything going wrong could have… consequences.

Instincts told her to get the hell out and throw the trash out later, but because of that curiosity that never quite left her, despite everything, she took a couple more steps forward. It looked like a person, with skin, hair, and everything, but the stillness was not natural.

Still, she couldn’t help but entertain the tiny shred of hope that if she called its name, it would open its eyes and look at her with that soft, world-weary expression it so often wore.

“Of course not! Constructs don’t have hearts. I’m asking you replace one of four entirely inorganic pumps,” I said.
Convincing her was the hard part. The maintenance procedure would be easy and shouldn’t take more than two minutes.
