Summary
Javert tries to open his eyes, but he only manages to crack them a sliver. They sting and through the pain, he can only see milky lights and darks. “Why?” he rasps, ignoring Valjean’s question. He wants to know why he’s alive.
“I saw you jump,” Valjean’s voice says, as if it’s that simple.
Maybe, to him, it is.
Valjean pulls Javert from the river. You know how it goes.

Summary
Valjean frowns at him, as if Javert is being blasphemous, but Javert is unfazed; he knows Valjean knows it's true. Eventually, it is Valjean who looks away first. "I am sick. I cannot do other things."
Javert cannot help the feeling of panic rising in him, that Valjean may never see sense, and Javert will always have to watch the one he loves labor through some incomprehensible self inflicted purgatory. "You are being difficult," he snaps. "You are sick because you are not eating. So eat."
Valjean is trying to extricate himself from Cosette’s life, but Javert is there to fuss over him. And Javert is very fussy, in his own way.

Javert knew as soon as he had spoken those words to Jean Valjean that he sounded odd. If he sounded odd even to his own ears, to a man who had known him as long as Valjean, he must have sounded like he was speaking in a little-used foreign tongue.
To an extent, he was. Lying well required a comfort with deception that Javert had never possessed, and he had not miraculously acquired it even in this late hour, no matter how convenient it would have been for him to have done so.

“Wait!” Valjean very nearly shouted again, despairing. “You would have me bear witness to this?”
His voice carried strangely, surrounding Javert where he stood upon the parapet, not quite an echo. It settled warmly in his chest, like sunlight on a spring day to his deciduous heart. He could not account for this feeling. It grated against his misery, teasing at something like hope in his own sorry breast. What a cruel trick it was, to try to steal his hopelessness.
“I did not ask for you to be here,” Javert said, his own desperation beginning to bleed into his tone of voice. “You are free to leave me at any time.”
“Surely you must know I cannot do that.”
“Avert your gaze, then,” he said, near to a growl, “and let me be.”

Curse him. Curse his name and this supposed gift he’d given of life. Even Javert’s final thought, submerged willfully in the cold waters of the Seine, was littered with the remnants of Jean Valjean. Let him be free. Let the water wash away the curse inflicted on his soul. Let him die now, too tormented to wait in agony for a natural death, even if it meant the remainder of his soul would go to Lucifer’s domain. Let his eternal life be one of misery, as he deserved. Perhaps Valjean would meet him there, but Javert did not think it so.
Rescued from the Seine by a determinably anonymous benefactor, Inspector Javert struggles to cope with the consequences of being left alive.

Valjean tugged on Javert’s scarf with his other hand, then pulled down the man’s hat before pulling away again. Javert leaned into the touch—almost too desperately—and decidedly did not whine at the loss. Javert from the past would have scoffed at him; though to Hell with his past self: the joys that he had discovered were not ones that he wanted to share with that damned man.
