Hans Capon has travelled to the backend town of Skalitz with Uncle Hanush. Somehow, this town seems so much smaller now that he’s grown up.
In need of a servant, Hans picks a new one from the streets of Skalitz. His name is Henry and for a servant, the man has some of the boldest eyes that Hans has ever witnessed.
And also quite surprisingly, this Henry is rather good at making Hans’ heart race.

The words form slowly, each one accompanied by a pulse of warmth that spreads through Lodi's body like whiskey going down. His telomeres. IX is concerned about his telomeres.
"I'm okay," Lodi manages, though his voice comes out ragged. The warmth has pooled low in his abdomen now, radiating outward in waves that make his thighs tense involuntarily. "Just need to lie down for a bit."
IX and Lodi figure some things out about just how good IX can make him feel.

Summary
Maybe downing an unlabeled potion tasting of vile ash and blood at the end of a successful battle might not have been the best idea. But he did. Curse his morbid curiosity. He’d even fucking seen the odd ingredients and weird runes written in the odd books he’d pilfered from the workbench. But had it stopped him? Of course not. Into the bag those books had gone and down the hatch the liquid went.
Now the helmet calls, while a devilish idea brews.
He’s done it once, after all. What’s to stop him from doing it twice? Aside from the shame, the public humiliation, and the promise of execution should he be caught. But really, what won’t Henry do to give his lord the freedom he so desperately needs, even if that path to freedom is paved with brimstone? There is no list shorter.

Hans has never met either Radzig or the mysterious boy he kept hidden before apparently revealing him to the world in a flourish, and with a lack of explanation Hanush had called typical of his old friend.
"Legitimised," Hanush corrects.
"What difference does it make?"
"It means you are not to speak to him like some commoner unless you want to get in trouble."
Hans keeps his mouth shut on the thought that trouble sounds better than the excruciating dullness that is his life.--
Hans and Henry meet at Sir Divish's wedding, both fifteen and of noble status. It still doesn't stop them from punching each other on the first day.
A duel and a half later, Hanush makes Hans write to Henry in apology, and an odd friendship begins. Until it becomes more and, possibly, worse.

Summary
Henry's forge was a source of pride--and for a boy from Skalitz who'd lost everything and had survived thus far on his own wits and the goodwill of others, it was more than well-founded. It had taken him just a couple of weeks to get it back up and running, and now he had something to show for all his hard work, he was eager to share it with his nearest and dearest. Recently, that position had been firmly taken up by one Hans Capon, whose noble birth and pretentious airs had done little to dissuade Henry from dragging him into every situation a man of his station should avoid.
So acquiring a forge couldn't be too much of a deviation from their particular brand of normal, could it?

Henry stared.
He looked up very slowly.
The apothecary offered a thin smile. “Natural vitality enhancer.”
Hans frowned. “That doesn’t sound so ba...”
He stopped mid-sentence.
A flush crept up his neck.

“Who are you?” the newcomer grunts, gaze trailing up and down Hans’ body.
Oh. Now that’s a question he hasn’t heard in… a while.
“You don’t know who I am?” he blurts out, unable to hold his surprise back.
The blacksmith removes a glove and wipes his forehead on the sleeve of a rundown, simple shirt.
“Should I?”
Well, that’s an obvious answer but… Hans takes a look at himself. His clothes are fine, yes, but not leagues more than a wealthy merchant’s, or a noble passing through town. He also hasn’t washed in two days, and his hair must be an incomprehensible mess. He will count himself lucky if he doesn’t have straw stuck in there.
“Uh…”
Only then does he notice just how clear the blacksmith’s eyes are. They blink, without ever moving away from Hans, awaiting an answer.
He doesn’t know what possesses him to say:
“I’m Hans.”--
There is a new blacksmith in Rattay and Hans Capon, having deserted his duties as a lord, has nothing better to do than bother him, watch him work and feed him kolaches, in no particular order. If he pretends to be a filthy commoner while he does so, and Henry buys it, it shall not be used as any measure of either their intelligence.
