Summary
Jinshi is terribly aware most people don’t love the way he does - case in point, he’s picked a single wood-sorrel when he could’ve had a blossom of every variety if he so chose. While he of course feels some male pride seeing Maomao pregnant and knowing he did that, more than anything he feels a deep love and curiosity for the child, and immeasurable appreciation for his wife. It's fascinating to know they created something that didn’t exist, and now they would be responsible for guiding it through the world. He would be a father.
So what was a good father?
Or, Jinshi's on the cusp of fatherhood, and then he's just plain in it. Meanwhile, the rest of the world keeps spinning.

Her face would turn all wistful and sad and MacCready would know that this isn’t the life she wanted, that if given the choice she’d never want a life like this in a million years and he’d feel…MacCready would feel so damn inadequate.
