Summary
Steve Rogers is a painter who lives in Brooklyn, and he can’t sleep. He keeps himself busy with work, volunteering, and helping his elderly neighbour Marjorie walk her dog. The city is warm at this time of year, good for long walks at night, and yet Steve still can’t sleep.
When he can’t sleep, he’s often painting. People, buildings, skylines.
But sometimes Steve paints things he doesn’t understand, or recognise. Shapes, movement, colours...and there’s a man. A man keeps appearing in his paintings. And something’s strange about his arm.

Steve hesitated but eventually stepped back, allowing Tony to take the microphone again. But the reporter just wouldn’t let up. “So just to clarify Captain, your stance on Alpha First-”
Something inside Steve snapped. A coil spring twisted out of shape, and beyond repair. He was tired, not just from the mission, but from life. Steve was tired that he’d lost everything, that he’d had seventy years stolen from him in a heartbeat, that all his old friends were dead, and yet - nothing had changed. The world had hesitated too. SHIELD, the government, the army. Another system pretending to make change while changing nothing. Hesitating at the precipice, and then taking three safe steps back. Steve was sick of it, sick of everything. He was sick of groups like Alpha First, who thought they understood the world, when they understood nothing. Nothing. They knew nothing about him. Who he was, who he loved, what he wanted, what he stood for-
What did Steve stand for?
Now that was a good question.
OR: Steve gets badgered by a conservative group during an Avengers conference. How does he respond? By kissing Tony Stark, his fellow alpha team mate.

“Had he said anything to you?” Natasha asked softly, eyes fixed on the shifting river beneath them.
Bucky shook his head mutely. “Something about being nervous about seeing Red Skull, he told me he wouldn’t be gone for long,” he said, words tasting bitter in his mouth now. “Guess he just saw her and…” He trailed off, not wanting to finish the sentence. The words twisted up his mouth, bottom lip trembling. He realised he was shaking.
“Oh James,” Natasha sighed. She sounded tired, so very tired. “I’m sorry.”

Steve was just supposed to be returning the stones, but when he comes back he's old, and he's apparently lived a whole life with Peggy Carter. A life without Bucky even in it.
Bucky doesn't know to move on from it.
He can't, and he won't.

Bobby slaps both gloved palms against the glass. “What are you saying, Buck?”
Buck doesn’t reply. He won’t meet Bobby’s eyes. He bows his head a little, reaching for the latch on his helmet.
“Buck!” Cold dread spills into the sockets of all of Bobby’s joints. “What are you doing!”
Buck fumbles to release the lock, but he gets it on the second try.
“Put your helmet back on! Kid!”

Embark with me on an angsty journey as we imagine a universe in which it was not Bobby who was infected with CCHF, but Buck. That means Buck was stuck inside with the team in 8x14 and 8x15 while Bobby was running around outside with Athena. And Buck didn't tell anyone he'd been exposed. Let’s assume everything else is the same. Oh, except no one’s dying this time because I said so.

Everyone only talks about how terrifying you are, how ruthless you are, and when I heard you’d be joining us for this mission, I thought, you know, ‘hey, they can’t possibly be as scary as the stories say,’ cause, like, that’s gotta be all blown out of proportion and exaggerated, right? But then like, it’s not and you are even scarier than all the stories put together – like I almost wet myself. And tonight, when you… when I… I thought, like, ‘this is how I’m gonna die’"

Three seconds. Four seconds. Five seconds. Six.
Steve comes back through the portal with the shield in his hand and a sad, strange look on his face. Jaw set, mouth tight. He hasn't aged a day.
The tension in Bucky's shoulders ebbs out in a rush. He pulls Steve in for a hug, sinks his real hand into Steve's hair like he's always wanted.
"Punk," he whispers, his mouth too close to Steve's ear. He'd been so sure. "You're late."
