It's been so long since he has heard anyone say that name out loud to him. He should have anticipated it, but nothing could have prepared him for the absolutely visceral reaction he’s experiencing at the sound of hearing Carl’s name again after all this time.
“I never did that.” He says firmly. “And I never did that to Carl.”
He’s surprised that he can even get the name out. But he does, because he doesn't want the last person in these woods who speaks Carl's name to be Brandon of all people, because it just doesn’t feel right.
“Carl was…” He starts to say, but he knows that nothing is coming after that. At least nothing that he's going to say out loud in the presence of this hero worshipping asshole.
