After Atems brief return to the world of the living and reunion with Yuugi during the events of DSOD the pharaoh realizes he is in love with his former partner. The Egyptian gods taking pity on him offer him a deal. Atem will have to complete a series of trials with the promise that if he succeeds he will be given a second chance at life and will be reunited with Yuugi. Atem accepts the offer and succeeds however is left deeply tramuatized from what he had to endure. Now alive again he begins to wonder if he’s even worthy of friendship, or if Yuugi could ever love someone like him.
