Summary
William can’t remember why they came here, or when.
His head is so heavy.
He falls asleep, resurfaces again, tries to eat and bathe and change his clothes. There must be servants—someone is running the bath, someone is bringing his meals, someone is doing the laundry–but he never sees a single soul.
Besides Victor, of course.

Summary
It’s a letter from their solicitor, informing Victor of his status as inheritor of William’s will. All very well and good on the surface. However, until his brother wakes up, there’s no way of knowing if Victor has actually handled anything. After being almost burnt to a crisp, William’s loathe to trust the man with his life, much less his finances.
And besides. He remembers that offhand comment about eviction notices.

Summary
Suddenly, the manor was awake again: Victor Frankenstein had returned.
With guest.
William couldn’t care less. Elizabeth, though–-he’d never seen her light up quite like this before. (Lie: he’d seen how she smiled at his brother.) When she finally lured the creature out of the manor, she was practically incandescent in the moonlight. William looked at her smile, at the way the creature stared at her as if she was Luna herself, and turned back to the crypt.

Summary
It takes William a moment to realize what’s happening. To be so close to Victor, to be held, is enough to cloud his mind to the searing pain across his back and the stench of burning flesh. Instinct is what saves him, prompting him to rear his head, just in time to watch the pale light of dawn streaking across the floor.
It seems that their fraternal bond is made of the same stuff as Cain and Abel’s.

What if you were 18 and your parents were dead and you were uprooted from your entire life to go live in another country, and also you made a childhood vow to a traumatic dream in which you swore to conquer death itself, but then a beautiful man decides to become your friend and won't take no for an answer; do you think you would fall in love instantly, or would it take a few months?

Summary
Large, freezing fingers take hold of his hair and wrench him up, up onto trembling knees as it snarls, there, close enough to rip his throat open with its maw of borrowed teeth.
"Do not think I am not tempted, Victor!" There is no heat to its breath, as it bellows its contempt not an inch from his face. Only moisture, and rushing air, expelled to defile his name. "To bleed you. To humble you."
--
"You have denied me death, I deny you in kind. You must live, Victor."
He hates the sound of his name in its mouth. Hates it. Had only it died as intended, that he would never suffer the sound again.
"For if you will not grant me a companion, I will take you as one."

Summary
“You naturalists are all the same,” Victor said. “You want to line up twenty specimens in a row and take a pair of calipers to their eyes and noses and abdomens and then scribble down all that you observe and use it to make reductionist predictions about the laws of nature–as if nature were such a thing that might be constrained by laws! I have never known a more criminal, twisted mind than that of nature.”

Summary
Elizabeth convinces William that the imprisonment of the Creature is inhumane, and that they must take him and leave at once. Summary
How good is it, this lie? For he is no spirit of the forest. He is no soldier, wounded and lifted high by noble deeds and bravery in battle. His hands are a soldier’s hands–his feet, those that carried braver men to their deaths. But he is no soldier.
(In which the Creature makes it back to the cabin before the wolves attack, saves his blind companion, and tentatively steps into a family.)
