It was a stupid thought, really. Haurchefant had this habit (bad habit. Terrible fucking habit.) of putting ideas in his head. He talked about ‘after the war’ like that was a scheduled event rather than a vague idealistic dream, and it made Mhana start to want things.

So he made the stupid ring and stuck it in his pocket to rot, and now here it was, molded in the shape of a silver snake, curled in Haurchefant’s palm, staring back at him with that stupid ruby eye he’d given it to match his own. Stupid.

It's supposed to be a sanctuary, though to Jack, it's always felt like anything but. For awhile, he exists as a ghost, impossibly lonely, and after that, he has her: sharp claws, deadly teeth, capable of tearing his limbs off. You know, all the important stuff. Things are fine when they're in the status quo, because he knows what to do and what to expect. He can deal with that.
Then the plane falls from the sky, flaming metal and sputtering parachutes raining down into the sanctuary trees, and that? Well. There's no more status quo after that.
