Skating was the closest experience Chess ever had to flying.
It’s Chess’ first time back in a competition after her knee injury, and she’s not nervous at all. Why, does it show? Not just because worry on her face could cost her routine’s score, but because her best friend in the entire universe is watching and knows Chess, and if Kate thought Chess wasn’t feeling well she’d probably drag the skater off the ice and force her to sit down, competition or not. Chess’ worry spans not only to her return to the ice, but because she’s also hoping to ask a certain loyal friend out afterwards – if all goes well. Then everything is different and the same.
The water comes out of the taps differently, in thin little lines that prick too-hard at his skin. Sunny imagines that they’re the first wave of an ongoing invasion, the stinging tendrils of a far larger hivemind. And the Hive Mother is so, so old. To her, the whole of the Glittering Harbor is just another little flicker of light. Her foot soldiers advance and the skin on Sunny’s back falls away cleanly. She yawns and the city stands empty, apartments stiff and silent like toy soldiers. She blinks a thousand onyx eyes and the harbor’s boiled dry, the skyline only dust. A city for ghosts.
Also, the ceilings are higher. And Sunny can see the ocean from his bedroom window.
Here’s what’s the same: The house is big and white and empty. Mom doesn’t come home. His sister is dead. Sunny is alone.
