Summary
This is a prequel to my love in different fonts - you do NOT need to have read/finished that to read this. It can stand alone as a short story about Jinshi & Maomao’s engagement (but you should read it, because I think it will make this more fun.)
OR
Jinshi’s wanted to marry her for a long time. Maomao has finally come around. They’re both eager to build a life together … and maybe also to get to their wedding night and swap virginities.
Too bad they have to wait another six months for a particularly auspicious date to do so!

Summary
But it was … natural. As if the ceremony had peeled away the last barriers of propriety between the couple. By no stretch was it flawless, but it certainly was precious. Without the constant force of wanting what he couldn’t have, and without Maomao’s incessant ignorance to his affection, Jinshi found it very easy to tilt her chin up and finish a conversation they had started many years before. It turns out when she is compliant, Maomao responds rather enthusiastically - to his kiss, his embrace, his hoisting her like a sack of rice before he laid her out on their bed.

“He can be his own man,” Maomao growled. “Without forsaking his family name.”
Of all the reactions she expected, Maomao never imagined the fall of Jinshi’s beautiful face, and the disappointment her husband now leveled her with. “Why not? That’s precisely what I aimed to do once, to have you.”
Maomao’s stomach twists. Once upon a time, her husband had been desperate for another life, one far away from his imperial responsibilities. He’d begged the emperor to let him go and give him a clan name, and the emperor had refused because he loved him too much to lose him. Jinshi, determined, had found another way to give them a life together, but it’s true that his royal title kept them tethered in many ways. Of course Jinshi would sympathize with Jin Xing, though Maomao’s certain their son hasn’t done this for something like falling in love, he’s far too pragmatic. Of course, there had been a time in Maomao’s younger days when she’d thought the same about herself.

Summary
Jinshi is terribly aware most people don’t love the way he does - case in point, he’s picked a single wood-sorrel when he could’ve had a blossom of every variety if he so chose. While he of course feels some male pride seeing Maomao pregnant and knowing he did that, more than anything he feels a deep love and curiosity for the child, and immeasurable appreciation for his wife. It's fascinating to know they created something that didn’t exist, and now they would be responsible for guiding it through the world. He would be a father.
So what was a good father?
Or, Jinshi's on the cusp of fatherhood, and then he's just plain in it. Meanwhile, the rest of the world keeps spinning.
