Summary
Ren sat right in front of Akechi. Akechi spent about half of the class watching her. The way Ren twirled her pen when she was thinking. Her long fingers, those soft-looking curls and deep grey eyes. The multitude of colored pens she had in her bag. The incessant meowing that Akechi heard every class.
"I don't think she studies". Ren seemed to get perfect grades without trying, which infuriated Akechi. Everything came easily to Ren: good grades, perfect looks, perfect skin.
“Then you can use that as an in. Say that you’re having trouble understanding the material and suggest a study date”.
Akechi sighed. “I doubt she’ll believe that, considering I’m one of the top students in the class”.
"Well, I guess you can study. But I was suggesting that you could study together".
Akechi's cheeks turned red. "God, I'm not that damn desperate"! She wouldn't mind some stress relief, but she wasn't going to jump into bed with just any girl. No matter how hot Ren was.
"Numerous text messages say otherwise".
"You wouldn't". Akechi said, narrowing her eyes.
Sumi stood firm. “Then ask her out”.

Summary
Akechi smiled. While that wasn’t how he pictured his evening going, it wasn’t all that bad. Especially with Ren ogling him like he was a five-course meal. He ran the brush through his hair. “Yes”? Akechi asked, turning to face Ren.
“Nothing, just watching you”. Ren said, leaning against the doorway. “You look nice”.
Akechi’s cheeks turned red. “You have this odd habit of watching me. I’m not that interesting”. He turned the hairdryer off and unplugged it.
“Au contraire, my love. I think you are very interesting”.
Akechi’s heart flipped. When Ren spoke like that it melted his heart. “Why do you call me that”?
“What would you like me to call you”? Ren whispered in Akechi’s ear.
Akechi put the hairdryer back and turned around. “My name”. He brushed past Ren.
“Kechi, would you help me pass my exam and keep from paying shit tons of yen in insurance”?

“Where’s Mona”? Akechi asked, stretching. The last time he’d seen him was at dinnertime. It was now 23:30.
Ren shrugged. “He went out somewhere”. He pulled out his phone. “ ‘Will probably be back late. Don’t wait up for me’ ”.
“Pull up the tracker app”.
Ren raised his eyebrow. “You put a tracker on my cat”?
“Please,” Akechi snorted unattractively. “You act like you’re surprised”. He ran a brush through his hair. “Since Mona turned into a human, he seems to be short on brain cells”.
Well, Akechi wasn’t wrong. Mona seemed to have the brain of a two-year-old. “Still, you put a tracker on his phone”.
Akechi met his gaze in the mirror. “I should put one on your phone too. Since you have a habit of disappearing when I’m not looking”.

Ren rubbed his neck. "Hey, Akechi, I didn't expect to see you here". God, he wanted to disappear. He's just lucky none of his other friends found out about this job. He'd never hear the end of it.

He wrapped a leg around Ren’s waist, flipping them. “Calling it a ‘crush’ sounds juvenile. Like we’re on the playground or in the sandbox”. Akechi’s fingers danced down Ren’s sides. He was almost twenty-one and too old for crushes. Plus, his ‘feelings’ for Ren were more complicated than that.
“Then what is our relationship”? Ren asked, wrapping his legs around Akechi's waist.

Hands still shaking, he turned around and began to gather up his various chisels. He was a mess, unsteady, making stupid mistakes and tucking tools in the wrong sleeves and having to take them all out so he could start over again. So distracted to the point a mallet slipped from his fingers and fell onto the floor with a sharp clank, startling him. It skittered somewhere behind him.
“Shit.”
Goro turned and dropped to his knee to grab the mallet the same time the sheet in front of him twitched. He whipped his head towards his statue and gasped again for the second time that night.
It was moving—no. The statue beneath the sheet was moving.
Statues couldn’t move.
