Summary
Donnie had always known he was a little off, even for someone who was a mutant turtle living in the sewers with his 3 turtle brothers and rat dad.
Donnie got along with his brothers just fine, for the most part, but sometimes they'd say something and he just wouldn't quite understand what they were talking about, or Leo would make a joke that left everyone in stitches while it flew right over Donnie's head.
He didn't understand why his brothers didn't love and appreciate technology as much as he did. Sure, they thought his tech was awesome and would praise him for his accomplishments, but whenever he wanted to rant and ramble about the latest thing he was working on and all the technical components within it he'd get awkward smiles and strange looks. It made Donnie feel like he wasn't quite right.
Then, of course, there were those awful times when some awful thing would happen, or when everything was too loud and bright and Donnie would just scream and rant and rave because it sucked, and he was hurting. Why was he in so much pain, why did he experience this when his brothers never seemed to have this problem?

He’d known about it well before Splinter kicked him out of his lab. How far back it went, he has no clear idea. Burnout is tricky. Sometimes he can tell the moment it starts to rear its head, and then he can go and decompress by skateboarding or playing video games, or by falling into the hole of a different hyper fixation until the feeling stops burning at his brain. Sometimes, though, it sneaks up on him and takes him by the throat, and the best he can do is just ride it out and hope he’ll crash before he melts.
“So a while, then?”
“…Maybe.”

Donnie turned quickly to his computer, typing in the query that had been bothering him since Raph had first mentioned it.

Within minutes, his suspicions — and fears — were confirmed.
The water wasn’t just getting to them, it was drawing out all their base turtle instincts.
It explained everything. His brothers' enjoyment of the water, Raph’s aggression, Leo being extra annoying, even Mikey becoming more possessive. His own longing to submerge himself, the building irritation that itched beneath his skin the longer he denied his instincts—---
During an intense rainy season, the lair begins to flood, and Donnie is the only one who can keep their home from sinking beneath the waters. It would be a lot easier to manage if the rain hadn't triggered their hindbrains to run wild.

Honestly? None of them take mystic as seriously as they should. Sure they respect it and are fascinated by it (excluding Donnie), but none of them really considered the dangers that it may hold for the four of them.
