“What do you imagine retired life to look like?” Shane asks, hours later.
“Want to spend lots of time with you. Annoy you. Cuddle you. Fuck you,” he nips at Shane’s shoulder at that last part. “I want to find job. Maybe work more at Irina foundation. Or do something else so I don’t get bored. Will be WAG, then, yes? So come to games but also hang out with other women. And Harris.”
Ilya presses a series of kisses to Shane’s neck, soft strands of hair tickling his face. “Make meal for hot husband, wait for him to come home. Rail him over kitchen counter. Or pick him up from practice, fuck him on hood of Lamborghini. Yellow one.”
“Anything else apart from work and sex with your sexy husband?”Ilya considers leaving it at that, but he has also learned that keeping secrets never works.
“Kids. One, maybe two,” he says.___

They toe off their shoes in the entryway and Shane looks around, pulling in a deep breath and letting it go. Two hours ago, his dad had walked in on him and Ilya and Shane had thought the world was ending. Now, the world seems bigger and more plausible than ever, like a smooth, fresh field of ice, stretching all the way to the horizon, just waiting for his skates to mark it up. He turns, and there is Ilya, hands in his pockets, watching Shane with a look of lazy contentment on his face as if he feels it, too.

Shane huffs out a breath, a faint, helpless smile pulling at his mouth. “I know.” His thumb brushes along Ilya’s cheek. “I just think this is taking a lot more out of me.”
“What is?” Ilya frowns, kissing the inside of Shane’s palm.
“This,” Shane says quietly, gesturing between them. “Keeping it a secret. I thought it would be easier. Just don’t talk about my love life, right? Avoid the questions. But it’s not like that. Every time something good happens, something funny, I think of you. I want to tell them about you. And every time I don’t, every time I hold that back, it hurts. And then I get angry, too, because no one else has to do this. No one else has to filter their life down to hotel rooms and fake names. I think what JJ said wasn’t really about him at all. It just reminded me that I can’t even brag about you.”
OR
After two blissful weeks at the cottage, Shane and Ilya return to their lives back in Boston and Montreal. As the season begins again, Shane is consumed by a loneliness so profound it pushes him to grasp at anything that might ease the pain.
