Summary
“Interoffice relationships?” Crystal frowned. “Oh, no. They’re not together. I mean, they’re together, but not like, together together.”
“You needn’t repeat yourself, dearie, I heard you the first time.” The Night Nurse paused, her brows knitting together. All that staring, and bickering, and blushing—and they weren’t a couple? In nearly seven thousand hours on the job, she’d never seen such foolishness.
Or: After Edwin’s confession, Edwin and Charles struggle to settle back in to their old routines in London. Fed up with the awkwardness between Edwin and Charles—and the distraction it poses to her paperwork—the Night Nurse sends them back to America on a new case. But when the case requires Edwin and Charles to pose as a married couple, it pushes them to re-evaluate their relationship. Are they really just friends? Or have they always been something more?

Summary
“Really, Crystal,” Edwin said haughtily, as if he hadn’t been making moon eyes at Charles a moment before. “What exactly is it that you are struggling to comprehend?”
Crystal fought back the urge to scream. “Oh, I don’t know Edwin,” she snapped, “How about the part where the Night Nurse’s desk ended up in flames?”
Or: Crystal returns from a trip with her parents to find the agency in chaos. Edwin and Charles are bickering even more than usual—and Crystal is determined to get to the bottom of it.

Summary
Charles was under no obligation to give Edwin a speedy answer, of course. Edwin knew, better than anyone, that these things took time. But recognizing the hypocrisy of his impatience didn’t make waiting any easier. Because while Edwin was very much in love with Charles, he was also confronting a century of repressed desires. And those desires were proving to be just as stubborn as Edwin himself. Edwin might want to wait for Charles, but they did not.
Or: Edwin’s hot girl summer begins with an investigation into Niko’s death—and a visit to the Cat King.

Summary
Charles, for his part, looked equally confused. “Hang on, whom I’m courting? Who did you think I was trying to court, mate?”
“That was what I was trying to ascertain, Charles,” Edwin said impatiently.
Or: When Charles asks Edwin about Edwardian courtship practices, Edwin becomes convinced that his best friend has found a new love interest: a ghost from the Edwardian era. After all, why else would Charles want to know about courting?

Summary
Charles knew he must look ridiculous, but he couldn’t help it; this was just so far from what he had expected to find in this spooky, seaside town. At any moment, Edwin would tartly inform him that he would catch flies with his mouth hanging open that way. Edwin’s teasing would be a relief, a reprise of their usual banter. But Charles’ best friend was uncharacteristically silent, mouth drawn in a thin, tight line.
Or: What happened when Charles and Edwin left to investigate Niko's room?
