A girl who looks around the same age as Collie’s younger sister greets him with a concerned expression when she pulls around to the window.
“Um,” she begins hesitantly after he reads back her total and she reaches out to hand him her card, “there’s a guy out there by the sign, I think he’s an employee but he’s, like, crawling around in the bushes…”
Collie closes his eyes briefly. “Yeah, he works here,” he says. “Would you like your receipt?”
When Collie's coworker Gary finds a kitten alone near their fast food joint, it leads to something Collie never would've predicted; but it just might be exactly what they both need.

Summary
She rolls her eyes, but there’s no venom in it. Richie leans forward and kisses her again, tempted to tease her more, because it’s always cute when she gets all ruffled, but he refrains, at least for the moment. It’s a little earlier in the day than usual for her to get frisky, but the day Richie questions his girlfriend being all over him is the day his doppelgänger has taken his place.
Gillian has a preferred method of stress relief, and Richie certainly isn't complaining.

She blinks hard, squeezing her eyes shut and opening them over and over, but nothing changes. The cameras pan across all the boys as the Major gives his speech, and every time it makes another rotation, she prays that head of blond hair will have disappeared from the group. But it never does.

Taniel had finally found the willpower to pull away, had grabbed Gary’s arm and led him out of that stinking place, back into the sunlight of the day. As if that would have been any safer. As if anywhere in Derry could be called safe.
Maybe Gary will be dead soon. Maybe they both will be, and half this fucked-up town besides, a whole new slew of missing posters to be pasted on lampposts and then promptly ignored.
Gary Barkovitch doesn't know if he will survive Derry, but he's at least found one thing worth loving in this haunted place.
