The ice stretched before him like a mirror for every insecurity he’d spent years pretending not to have. There were children spinning in bright scarves, couples gliding hand in hand, and the occasional reckless teenager who carved chaos into the surface with a laugh. And there he was—black coat, gloves, hair slightly damp from melting snow—looking, as Jesper had put it when they’d passed him earlier, like a man who came to audit the joy out of winter.
He didn’t notice Inej until she tapped the toe of her skate against his boot.
“Still thinking of making a run for it?” she asked. Her breath came out in small clouds, each one vanishing before it could drift between them.

She stepped into the room; eyes almost immediately drawn to the stranger sitting in the old green armchair. He was dressed in all black, exactly as Kristina had said, cane resting in his leather covered, right hand. He was watching Alina in turn, expression cold and unreadable.
Alina felt scared of him, without knowing why. Something about his stare and all black clothes perhaps. He had a scar cutting down his face from above his left eyebrow to the top of his lip and a metal contraption on his right leg. The dark of the room seemed to settle in the sharp edges of his cheekbones and hollows of his eyes, as if the light from the candelabras could not touch him. Alina had the wild thought that death had come calling and had come for her specifically.
