There's always been something about being on stage that makes Emily feel like a whole different person. Maybe it's how loud it is, that hazy kind of ambience that comes with the low lights and the way the music vibrates through her skin.
Maybe it's the people on the crowd, screaming and dancing and feeling like they belong somewhere for at least one night. Maybe it's Derek sweating by the drums, or Spencer on the keyboard with his eyes closed. Maybe it's Aaron rumming through his bass or Penelope backstage singing along and controlling the lights.
Maybe it's the way JJ looks at her while she sings.
Whatever it is, Emily thinks as she looks at her friends, it makes her feel like she belongs somewhere, too.

for JJ, Emily, Penelope, Spencer, Derek, and Aaron -- it's more like four years of chaotic parties, academic pressure, sexual identity crises, and unexpected friendships, and the slow, painful process of figuring out who the hell they are.
there's unspoken feelings, bad decisions made at the worst times, more late-night dining hall runs than anyone should admit, and one too many instances of pretending everything is fine when it isn't.
they come to Georgetown as strangers. they leave -- well, still kind of a mess, but at least they're a mess together.
growing up is hard. growing up alongside the people who might ruin you a little less? that's something.
