It has never been more clear to him that he does not belong here. He is not a rebel. He is not one of them. He is something different and dangerous. He has no heartbeat and does not breathe the same air that Barbatos has blessed. He is a cursebearer.
Venti and the others have always tried to make it clear to him that his curse does not define him. That he is more than his circumstances. That he is still a person, someone who deserves freedom. And Barbatos (in the rare moments that he speaks as such) has made it known that Dahlia has always been, and will always be, one of his children.
But they had not seen him at his worst.

"Well, I can't see you, so I don't believe that it's so. You'll have to show yourselves to me first before I'll believe you have any power over me."
His voice shakes, and his eyes burn. His vision does not blur because there is absolutely nothing for him to see up here. But he can feel the hotness of tears wetting his face.
"Show yourselves," he pleads. "Just... show me that I'm not alone. That anything I have ever done has mattered. That I matter!"

The Necromancer is driven from Mirkwood, and Elladan and Elrohir find someone altogether unexpected in the pits of Dol Guldur.

Dorian turned to him in horror. “W-what’s happening?”
“He gave into the Abyss. There’s…some sort of rift that’s—” Barbatos flinched, doubling over in pain as he felt the warning from Celestia echo in his bones.
