Summary
Phainon closes his eyes and pictures the Blade of Fury in his mind, gold and bronze and flame, cast against the night sky like a meteor stalled in time.
“…Mydeimos. I need your help.”
He opens his eyes. For a moment, there is nothing, only the cold wind and the encroaching sound of death.
But only for a moment.
From the west, a divine light blooms, casting the billowing clouds a deep, bloody red.
Phainon sucks in a sharp breath.
Phainon has been reluctant to call upon Mydei since he'd left Okhema. It would be selfish, Phainon tells himself. When circumstance forces him to call out the name of his new god, Phainon is reminded of what he misses so dearly, but also of what he has gained.

The memory of his loss clung to Phainon like a stubborn heat–and not the kind he was used to.
The last duel had ended quite embarrassingly for him. The heat had wrung him dry, left him barely conscious, limbs too weak to move. The last thing he remembered before everything went dark was strong arms catching him before he collapsed completely. When he awoke, it was Mydei who was carrying him out, setting him down with the same unimpressed expression he always wore.
That wouldn’t do.
