“Did you make that?” Jamil asked, genuinely curious.
“Of course I did! I learned just for you!”
The amused smile on Jamil’s lips was that of genuine amusement. He hadn’t expected Kalim to actually do anything that would require any more work than preparing for something he wanted. “I’ll help you next time.” And I’ll make Trey help us.
The head of Scarabia smiled, leaning over slightly and to grab one of Jamil’s between both of his and give a gentle squeeze. “I’m looking forward to it!” He pulled his hands back, grabbing something he had hidden away under the table. “But I got you this, too.”
Grey eyes glanced towards the crowd of people already cutting into the cake. He was thankful they weren’t paying attention--he didn’t want them feeling like they had to give him presents as well. The vice head already hated the fact that Kalim insisted. He grabbed the rectangular package, intricately wrapped by someone he was sure wasn’t the boy beside him. Carefully, so as not to rip the beautifully printed paper, he slowly unwrapped the book.

You freeze; as his hands reach toward you, your blood goes ice cold despite the high afternoon sun. A dread, alien chill settles in your little bones like nothing you've ever felt before, and out of the corner of your eye you sense the drowsy fanning of the butterfly’s wings.

Jamil looked about ten years older, clearly a grown man where just two hours before he was only seventeen. His hair was tied back in one messy braid and thrown over his shoulder. His clothes were drastically different too, bolder and more fashionable than what the servant usually let himself wear. Perhaps most surprising of all though, was the way he looked at Kalim- with warmth and concern in place of the usual irritation.

Summary
When Jamil falls into a coma due to a failed suicide attempt after learning that he is expected to be trapped as a servant forever, Kalim seeks to create a better world for Jamil to wake up in.
The trouble is, to do that Kalim would need to train under his father to become the next head of the Asim estate. Without Jamil’s guidance and plenty of old-fashioned traditions standing in his way, it proves to be quite the daunting quest.
With the aid of friends, determination, and new found maturity, Kalim works to become an heir worthy of inheriting his father's fortune and the friend Jamil always needed.
