Summary
The scientist was usually still asleep by the time they left for work - because apparently, they got one quickly after losing their first position - and would wake up to an empty bed and the unexplainable feeling of emptiness deep in his chest - one that he would rather not address. Ever.
So that’s how it usually went: Gordon would open his eyes, try to sleep some more, cry a little, and maybe stare up at the ceiling for half an hour if he felt particularly crazy that day. Then he would cry some more and blame it on his roommate that, of course, wasn’t there.

Summary
Gordon fiddled with the scalpel he held in his gloved hands, finally letting himself look at the thing again. And it looked back, just for a while before ignoring him completely. Its eyes were wide open and wild; jumping from one side of the room to another as if looking for the way out. Gordon took a step back, feeling his whole body tremble. It wasn't right - it couldn't be. The scars, their unmoving body- it wasn't breathing! It wasn't! But its shoulders twisted just as its legs, trashing against the table. High-pitched wheeze escaped its glowing throat, only muted by the metal device that kept the alien's mouth closed. It seemed to choke on its breath, pale skin of its neck and cheeks flushed with unnatural colors.
Gordon was really excited about his new job. Well, he isn't anymore.

Summary
So yes, they took interest in mortals' relationships but they just couldn't understand them - as if something was broken within them.
They felt so many emotions but ironically couldn't feel the right ones - the ones they've heard made humans what they were. But it was probably their fault- they never tried hard enough, they didn't want to try, to be honest. But the fact that they couldn't feel that, even if they wanted, left them desperate. It was lonely to live amongst humans. They lived, laughed and loved and all that crap.
But Benrey was stuck on the thin line between life and death; when they laughed it made the ground shake and when they loved... they didn't do it the right way it seemed. -

Summary
The physicist wasn't sure when he started thinking of Benrey as 'his' - was it possessiveness? He wouldn't acknowledge it as possessiveness - but it just... was quite fitting.
Benrey always was his problem, enemy, little charming nuisance - you get it.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not so bad. He could’ve died in that explosion. That thought keeps him grounded most days. Every throb behind his eyes, every dizzy spell, every flash of light that feels like someone striking a match inside his skull; he just reminds himself that it could have ended there. In a fire. In pieces. Instead, he just gets migraines.
