    Summary

"Of all the ridiculous, risky things I expect of you, gambler," he said, slowly and deliberately, "bringing a trained assassin to your own home — one that attempted to kill you mere hours ago, no less — was decidedly not on the list of things I ever anticipated."

The tone was scathing, harsh and reproachful, but it did little to faze the smaller man, whose smile never faltered. "One of these days I'm going to teach you that to gamble well means being able to anticipate any outcome, no matter how ridiculous or impossible it might seem."

While on their first field assignment since Penacony, Aventurine and Ratio are surprised to encounter a vengeful Avgin mercenary. As soon as she speaks, however, a name and face from the past spring instantly to Aventurine's mind — that of his supposedly dead sister, Kadriya. In what proves to be the biggest gamble of his life, he strikes a deal with her to convince her to come back to Pier Point with him, even though he can't be sure of her actual identity. What follows is a tense and chaotic ride that none of them expected, filled with mystery, secrets, distrust… and regret.

    Summary

"The simulated universe is no doubt a great achievement, but I fear it will never reach its full potential if you only ever research Aeons. Therefore, I would like to propose a new project with a focus on humanity itself. The introduction of a few human vices should make this more than possible.”

“You believe gambling is one such vice?”

Yes, he should say. That is what he believes. It would be hard to invent a more elegant way for people to ruin themselves. Somehow, though, he finds that a certain memory of Aventurine smiling at him across a poker table blocks the answer in his throat.

“I believe it's human,” he says.

    Summary

“So, you admit you were wrong. I am nothing but a foolish drunkard, after all,” Aventurine says with a laugh.

“Not quite.” Ratio shakes his head. “You are not like the other fools. You are not drunk on fate or destiny. Only on reckless abandon.”

“And you on soft sentimentality,” Aventurine counters with a grin. “Look carefully, doc! I’m just a drunk man. Drunk on success, drunk on his own pitiable luck, and…” Aventurine drops his arms, letting them hang limply beside him. He hiccups, grin morphing into a lop-sided smirk. “And drunk on you, my dear doctor.”

    Summary

Ratio shifts forward. “If there is something I can do to assist you, Aventurine, then I will try my best to—”

“I need you to marry me.”

To escape a bureaucratic shitstorm brought on by his less-than-complete onboarding paperwork, Aventurine comes to Ratio with a proposal: stay married for a period of two years, then get an easy, quickie divorce once Aventurine's residency status is secure.

Only, it's not enough for them to simply get married; the marriage has to look legitimate too. Which is fine. Aventurine can act the part. Except, he's not really acting. Not anymore. And this last-minute trip to visit Ratio's family in Bumfuck Nowhere, Veritas Prime as Ratio's newly minted fiancé is threatening to prove it.

    Summary

Apocalypse: Star Rail might be the worst game Dr. Veritas Ratio has ever played. In what world is murdering half the known universe for no reason even remotely reasonable? What kind of game kills off its most compelling characters just for shock value?

Also, why is he now in the game — and as a damn NPC, out of all things?

【 Activation Code: “Moronic developers, moronic game.” It is our sincere wish that during your time, you can fulfill your desires and, in accordance with your wish, transform a piece of moronic work into a magnificent, high-quality, first-rate classic. Bound Role: Unnamed male NPC of the Veritas Prime star system, age 0. 】

【 Congratulations! Welcome to Apocalypse: Star Rail, version ██! 】

Well. If these idiot developers can’t take constructive criticism, Veritas might as well construct the criticism himself… by forcibly inserting himself into a plot where he’s never existed.
