Time stops moving.
Leslie, ever the professional, plows right on before the bombshell has had time to settle. Jason doesn’t need her to explain what HIV is to him. He’s well aware. He’s watched and read depictions of the illness before, in novels and musicals, most of them tragedies because sickness always ends in tragedy. Like terminal cancer, or an oncoming train while you’re stuck in the middle of the tracks. No escape. No happy endings.

The only thing worse than crawling out of your own grave to find your father had replaced you with the first black haired, blue eyed preteen he could find, is said replacement begging you to sign emergency foster papers... except maybe you signing said papers and having to learn how to be a parent on the fly... The Arkham Knight remained motionless from where he was lying in a pool of his own piss and vomit. Dead to the world. His slow pulse indicated he was sick and wouldn’t be cognizant for an indeterminate amount of time. Slade followed the breathing exercises drilled into his head from his military days, trying to quell the anger. He had dealt with worse than parasuicidal contractors. But the act just made the reek of acid and rot pervade his sinuses - doing nothing to help his temper. -

Summary
Being Robin means the world to Jason. The cape is more than just a uniform, it is a sign of everything that is fair and good. And Jason will always do everything he can to be worthy of the mantle, which means that, in any situation, he will always try to do the right thing. Even if the price he has to pay is high.

And sure, maybe Hood is at the top of the list of reasons why Bruce doesn't want Robin patrolling solo right now. Maybe Jason's murderous loathing for Tim makes him the worst potential candidate for what he's determined is a rescue mission…but Tim's the only help available, so help he will. And who knows? Maybe he can find a way to bring Jason back home along the way.
