'I could send you down there again. You miss it.'
The voice in his head is warm, gentle. But he knows it's a mirage. His Father is many things, but gentle is not one of them. He's cruel and kind, loving and hateful, a teacher and destroyer. But not gentle. Never gentle. Why should he be, when the world he created is not? Gentleness comes from humans, and humans alone.
"I don't want to go back," Jesus replies. Sometimes he can see his Father, from the corner of his eyes. Sometimes he can hear his true voice. He could have more, if he were to give up on his humanity fully. Become like the angels. If he does that, he'll be giving up the human parts of himself.
He'll be giving up the nearly-nonexistent chance he has of ever having his reunion.

Arthur nearly splutters, turning his head toward John for the full wide-eyed effect, “Brooding? Am I brooding?”
John makes a noncommittal noise, makes sure to ruffle the sleeve of his coat as he motions, “It was the closest word I could come to, so yes. I think you are. For the entire day you have been, in fact.”

Snap. “What?”
Kayne rests his elbow on the table and his chin on the back of his hand, raising an eyebrow at John and curling his answering smile into an almost mocking grin. “You’re staring again~” he sing-songs.
John glares. “I’m not.”
Kayne’s eyebrow lifts higher and he drops his hand, instead taking a judgmental sip of his tea.
“Okay, Kayne,” John starts, annoyed, “I may be-“
“Are.”
“-might be,” John reiterates, to another skeptical sip of tea, “just a little bit.”
Kayne gives him a flat look, thudding his tea down on the table. “You have a page full of sketches of him.”

Following the death of his daughter, famous film composer and pianist Arthur Lester drops out of the music scene and disappears from the public eye. Ten years later, Arthur now works as a private investigator and has no interest in performing or composing ever again.
John is intrigued by Arthur, who comes to his club to drink on the rare nights that there’s no music scheduled. As they meet again and again, they begin to grow closer. But Arthur isn’t the only one with a past he’s trying to run away from.
