Summary
In the heart of winter, Prince Edwin's parents all but throw him out of his own castle with only an order to get to the kingdom of Port Townsend posthaste. Such is the life of a royal pawn, apparently.
But at least he's got Charles with him. Charles, his personal guard and best friend. Charles, who has a Lady he is courting at the castle. Charles, whom Edwin has loved in secret for years.
It's fine. Edwin is used to it. There's no reason traipsing through the kingdom on their own should change anything. It's only one week, after all.

The thing is, while Edwin appreciates Charles’ chivalry in pretending it’s nothing more than a bit of snow, the fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more than that. The whole wretched business started two weeks ago when they were breaking into an abandoned witch’s workshop, and Charles broke a little glass bottle labelled, ominously, The Shove. Edwin had opened his mouth to warn Charles, but he wasn’t quick enough, and they both caught a faceful of chalky, overpoweringly rose-scented powder that made Edwin sneeze for the time since 1916. He had hoped that time might have diminished its efficacy, but it wasn’t long before the effects began to make themselves known. Over the last two weeks, it’s become clear that not only is the spell still quite functional, but it appears to be contriving to put them in—Edwin feels hotly embarrassed all over to think of it—romantic situations.
