At the crossroads, Avery turns left.
The golden doors loom over his character, tall and identical, their surfaces catching the light in a way that feels just a little too deliberate. Even from behind the screen, a chill prickles along Avery’s arms.
Still, he swallows it down. Keeps going. It’s fine. It’s just a game.
He approaches the doors, takes one final breath, and then—
“A block of gold?”
Well, what had he expected, anyway?
Something grander?
Something scarier?
Something less boring?
“Well… that’s that, I guess.” Avery mutters, wrist twitching as he moves to turn his character around and head back, when—for better or worse—something interesting does happen.
His head suddenly feels… heavy. Too heavy. His vision starts to blur, the screen warps.
The room tilts—
And the last thing he registers is the dull thud of his head hitting the keyboard.

Sometimes Apo wishes the world was exactly how Cherri envisioned at all times, if only to make sure the princess was right about everything she said.

The dark blue color fit her well, and seeing the moon knight with her hair down, made Cherri want to brush her hands through it gently and braid it, like she used to with her friends, yet Cherri would put way more care and effort into it this time around.
The curls were laid upon Apos shoulder, and despite what you would think of someone who constantly wore their hair in a bun, they were well taken care off.“It was very damn weird, seeing you walk up-” Apo breathed, her nose scrunching as she seemed to think back on whatever moment she was going to recount. Cherri kept her mouth closed, solely focused on whatever she was being told.
“And me… feeling things, I was confused,” Apo admitted, words flowing without thought.
Cherri’s entire thought process stopped dead in its tracks, and she nearly choked on air.

“There’s nothing for you here.” His voice is flat, as if set on his mind, but his hands, shaking ever so slightly, give him away. Though his face is still mostly obscured, Avery can tell from his body language that Derek wants to turn tail and flee, the only thing stopping him being the consequences that would arise from it. There is a tension in his jaw that speaks volumes, and for a brief, absurd moment, Avery wants to run his thumb over it, smooth out the creased, shuddering parts.
He inhales sharply. Now is not the time for that.
In which, on top of everything else, Avery and Derek happen to also be neighbours in real life.
And while Derek doesn't think much of it (lies), Avery seizes this chance to finally save the man he barely knows from a fate worse than death (and hopefully, selfishly, get to know him a bit more in the process)

The last thing D3rLord3 ever said to AveryTheMayo in that world was a question. A distraction. A way to push him somewhere safe before the door closed.
Derek Hutchins wakes up at 3am and cannot convince himself he is real. He presses his hand to his own chest and counts his heartbeat and it doesn't help, and then Avery is there, sitting on the kitchen floor, asking him about chip flavors like it's the most natural thing in the world.
