Summary
A quick scuffle, and she loops bandages around their wrist, pulls them off balance, and with a well-timed kick they fall flat on the floor.
She's quick to capitalize on her advantage, catching their other wrist in a bind and securing the hold with a knee on their chest. Snatching the intruder's knife from where it's fallen on the floor, she twirls it in her hand.
"Nice," she remarks. "Guess I'm getting one nice thing out of this shit. Who the fuck are you?"
The intruder blows a lock of hair out of his face. Her face? Honestly, now that Kemi gets a good look, they're gorgeous. Too bad! They're going to be nothing but an annoying corpse to deal with soon.
"K, I presume?" they say. "I'm an ally."
"Nice try," Kemi says. "I don't do allies. You want to try something else before I cut off a loose end?"

He's singing into the storm, voice weaving with the wind as it whips spray into his face.
A sound cuts through the trance. It’s faint, but his ears can’t ignore it. He's abruptly pulled back to himself, eyes frantically roving the surface of the waves.
There, a speck of sodden red. He's only able to see it a moment before a cresting wave swallows it. The thing disappears, but not before it lets out another desperate cry.
Wilbur's storm-intensified instincts surge. He's diving from the rock before he can think.Wilbur wakes slowly. He winces as he uncurls, pain shooting down his tail. The cavern feels so much smaller today—scud, his head hurts. Something in his arms wiggles and he jerks back, hitting his shoulder on the rock wall.
Scud, he says, or tries to say—the word won’t leave his mouth. His throat aches, probably from the singing. That’s normal. What isn’t normal is the thing sleeping in his cavern.

The new hero’s uniform was bright primary colours, one of the vaguely beetle-inspired looks they were spitting out this year with yellow goggles pressed over their eyes and an iridescent blue split cape reminiscent of elytra behind them. Dark skin, homemade pronoun pin stuck to the chest of their uniform, and they had to have had their hair done yesterday, because the bleach and the fade were both pin-perfect. They looked altogether too young and excited to be kitted out in combat gear, and their presence in Erin’s office was interrupting the flow state she had been in with her paperwork.
“Fuck off,” she told the power handler who’d brought the kid in. “Whatever it is, I’m not interested.”
“Foreboding is going to be working with you for the next few weeks, Prescience.” The handler’s expression was bland.
No. She didn’t want this. Not ever, but especially not now.
Or: Prescience is one week away from turning rogue.
