Levi wanted to say well you’re the one that left, and you’re the one that keeps coming back, but he knew it took two. Took two to ruin it, took two to get them back to where they were now. Erwin coming back, using the key he’d once returned, wearing clothes from boxes that he’d never bothered collecting. But Levi was the one that decided it was worth it, when he could pretend for hours at a time that Erwin was his again, when he could fall asleep in a warm bed beside the only man ever worthy of loving. It unsettled him in the moments after when he was left alone again, sitting with the understanding that he’d gone from being his partner to his dirty little secret.

“It’s okay. You can take it out on me. It’s okay.” Erwin looked ahead, the soft thud of loose fists falling harmlessly against his chest before Levi suddenly stopped. Then the tears began choking him, turning his small face red beneath the mud and the filth. It was less crying, but a violent sob that took over. The kind that grabbed him by the shoulders, and pulled noises of hollowed grief from his throat. An uncomfortable sight, the crying of a man that hardly knew how.

Levi remembers little about those first few weeks post-Rumbling. He’s left to a makeshift field hospital, worked on in the stench of a broken country by civilians forced into the role of nurses, as ashen as the rest of the patients.
Levi is given no peace to his thoughts, and no time for himself. People stream in to see him, recent friends, and traumatised warriors. Eldians and other strangers. They all praise him like some hero. Levi finds his words lacking, he finds his mouth sealing up like a tomb. He thinks of Erwin, and his friends, what he saw of them as they disappeared into the dust. His imagination, he is certain, but it felt real to him. All of them, so real and alive.
