She’d stepped in on him before. She’d stepped in through a door he hadn’t even opened yet.
He was cleaning up. He was telling her he was fine. Telling her he’d pay for the—the fucking Uber, whatever it was she was worried about. Her hands full of all this goodness and his own hands streaked with his own blood. Cleaned up and off with rubbing alcohol, gauze gripped, and he could feel her gaze on his skin. The freckles on his shoulder-blades. The tattoos, tactical vest heaved off wherever he’d left it. Slope of his bare chest; skitter of his too-slow heart. Her eyes there too and he wanted to say: How’d you get in here? I shut the door. The door was shut. But he knew it was a stupid fucking thing to say. He knew he didn’t really mind, either: the open door, her beyond it. He knew he’d never locked it. He knew even if he had she’d probably be able to find her way through.
