Clary meets Alec and is introduced to the Shadow World a little differently. She goes to Idris for formal training. Simon...doesn't cope very well and still becomes a vampire. On the plus side, he and Jace get off on a slightly different foot this time around.
Or: Jace stalks Simon into a friendship. Simon dies and comes back and then has a little crisis about it. Two emotionally repressed men watch Mean Girls.

"“Fuck!” Simon exclaims, jumping. “What the fuck, dude?” He glares at Jace. “What, do I have my own personal stalker now?”
“You haven’t texted Clary,” Jace says instead of actually replying to Simon like a proper person."

"“You must be Simon,” Alec then says. “I’ve heard a lot about you.” He actually smiles.
Simon feels more terrified by that than the vampires.
They haul him out of the abandoned hotel that is decidedly less abandoned on the inside (who knew vampires were so into gold?) and Alec then leaves with one last brooding glare to go do some paperwork.
