The voice comes from too close.
Dick stiffens. He hadn’t expected to hear that voice tonight, certainly not here. Calm, steady, threaded with something he can’t quite place. Recognition washes over him slowly, like a hand on the back of his neck, grounding.
“Yeah," Dick murmurs, lowering his hands from where he had put them over his eyes. The bar swims back into focus; lights blotchy as the last of the phosphines begin to fade. “Something like that.”
There’s a pause. The kind that suggests he’s being observed.
“You look like you need something stronger than a beer tonight, pretty boy.” The nickname lands softly, a faint edge underneath it. Concern, perhaps. “Want your usual?”
Dick swallows, mouth dry. His thoughts slip back to Roman, sharp words, loud words - he doesn’t trust himself to unpack any of it out loud.

Bucky lifts his head, wiping the snot from his nose with the back of his hand. His eyes dart to the other side of the room, to what should be an empty armchair but instead he locks eyes with Alpine, his cat. Her bright, baby blues almost soften towards him and Bucky’s bottom lip starts to quiver again, and Alpine meows softly.
She jumps from the chair and pads over to Bucky, manoeuvring herself between his legs and purring softly.
“Good girl, ‘Pine,” Bucky smiles sadly, a few stray tears falling from his eyes. He sniffs, wiping them away quickly, as if he was hiding them from the cat. “You want some food, baby girl? Yeah? Some fish?”
