He needed an anagram for Kit’s name. Luckily, anagrams were one of his many specialities. His pen drifted to the margin of the page. He started by writing out her full name, all in capitals. KIT SNICKET. Ten letters, three vowels. Then he got to work.

Summary
Since that day, he’d thought about her more often than he cared to admit. More often than was probably wise. Rusty Lake was at the forefront of his thoughts, yes, but she was always in the background. Standing calmly in the sunlight, or lying in a pool of her own blood. Always watching him, with blue eyes and blindingly white ones. Some days he was certain that she was still alive, waiting for him, somewhere. Other days, he wondered if she’d ever really been there at all, or if she’d just been a figment of his tired old brain.
