Fraser returns to Chicago after a short holiday up north and finds a stranger in Ray Vecchio's place. Too bad it's not Ray Kowalski.
This story was originally posted in March of 2004. It is, as they say, a product of its time. It's written in first-person present-tense POV, so if that's a deal-breaker, bail out now. There are things I would change if I were writing it now, but I'm going to let it stay as it was posted lo these many years ago. All that being said, I'm still pretty proud of it.

Ray combs his fingers through the patch of fur worst hit, and although he’s not looking at Fraser, he can feel him stand to attention.
“I don’t know why I always get taken in by this act. You’re not even a real dog,” he grouses, happily, as Dief licks his hand. “Just sit by the fire and it’ll dry. Or get Fraser to wash you. See if I care.”

Ray moves north, tries new things, meets new people, and thinks it’s very unfair of Fraser to be suspicious of his newfound acceptance of snow. He’s only called the Northwest Territories a malicious wasteland a handful of times.
Fraser still has some things to get used to, too.
