Remember, all the government posters say, it was the Marked that destroyed the world.
The Old World was lost to famine and calamity and a new, harsher one has risen in its place. A city divided into sectors, ruled by a king and his chaebol court, where the Marked struggle to eke out a living in poverty and oppression, and one mistake can get you sanctioned forever - lost to hard labor in the factories and greenhouses or to life as a companion trapped in the gilded apartments of the inner sector elite.
But a revolution is stirring in the shadows and everything is about to change.

This was so good. Amazing. I had goosebumps on my arms as I read the last few chapters. My heart hurts a bit reading the epilogue where everyone has already died but it’s perfect and bittersweet.
Remember, all the government posters say, it was the Marked that destroyed the world.

he yanks jeongguk’s arm through the bars, hard enough that jeongguk’s body is forced against the metal painfully. “and if you so much as raise your hand against me, jeon jeongguk,” yoongi whispers. “i will throw you overboard and leave you to die.”
when yoongi lets go of him, stepping away from the bars, jeongguk can’t help but chuckle. it’s as yoongi is disappearing back into the shadows that he calls out, “wouldn’t be the first time, spitfire.”
(or: after being arrested, pirate captain jeon jeongguk is given an ultimatum—help the military find and capture five of the most notorious pirates on korean waters or be executed for his crimes. the choice should be easy… except jeongguk must work with naval commander min yoongi, the man he once loved and lost and has since learned to hate. but the sea has a funny way of mending broken things, and jeongguk has always been at her mercy.)

This was the right amount of angst and even the side relationships had developments that were perfect and added to the story. 10/10 would read it again but I’m afraid I’ll cry a second time too.

so taehyung gets out of the boat, even if some part of him already knows he will not find what he’s looking for here. but the same thought that has pushed him onward for a year pushes him on now, just four words that have gotten him back onto that ship time and time again, no matter how many times he comes back alone:
there was no body.
(or: a year ago, the cry of hades sunk to the bottom of the sea and took park jimin with it. but taehyung refuses to stop searching for his lost love, even if it means turning to the darkest parts of piracy, immersing himself in magic, and sacrificing all he has to bring jimin home. a +something in the water spin-off.)

so taehyung gets out of the boat, even if some part of him already knows he will not find what he’s looking for here. but the same thought that has pushed him onward for a year pushes him on now, just four words that have gotten him back onto that ship time and time again, no matter how many times he comes back alone:
