“Canwejustpretend?”
The words rushed out of her before she could stop them. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping that if she waited long enough Jack would just get up and leave without saying anything more.
But of course, Jack Abbot wouldn’t leave her.
“Samira,” he said with all the patience he showed little kids in the ED, “can you say that one more time for me?”
She raised her gaze to look at him, only to find that he was looking at her first.

“How the hell did you end up in this situation?”, Robby, always Robby, is the one to ask the logical question.
“I don’t know”, Abbot answers and if there was someone there, both by his tone and the way his shoulders fell defeated, they could tell he meant it. “It was supposed to be a joke, you know?”

“That was me being polite.”
“And are you usually this polite?”

She takes another breath, and then says, in a rush:
“I’m the delusional ex.”
He blinks.
It’s on the tip of his tongue to admonish her for that kind of self talk, like she does with him when he’s in a mood and feels like he’s just a shell of the kind of man he could have been, the kind of man she deserves, but then he remembers she said delusional, and that pings in his head with—
“Wait, the what?”
“From that song. Ka$h wrote it about me.”

Summary
Jack Abbot woke up on his birthday to Samira standing over him with the kind of smile that meant he was already doomed.
“Don’t get up,” she said sweetly. “It’s a family tradition now.”
“We don’t have family traditions,” Jack mumbled into the pillow.
“We do,” she said, placing something heavy and ceramic into his hands. “As of today.”
He squinted at it.

There are plenty of wishes Jack has that are better left unuttered and unfulfilled. And yet, when they pull back from each other, Samira smiles a smile brighter than anything an amateur pyrotechnician could conjure up, and his heart alights.

"Do you think you might want to move in here?" It came out unsure in a way Jack rarely found himself.
Samira put down what she was reading, turning her body to face him head on and looking up at him utterly befuddled.
"What do you mean?"
It wasn't a yes. But it wasn't a no either. Jack could live with that.

“Robby," says John, gesturing with his sandwich, "and the United Services Organization, are giving Samira a pilot for Christmas."
“Oh how nice,” says Parker, and then, "Wait.”
Samira nods. John gestures again. A bit of bologna flies off and lands on the counter with a wet thwap. Samira feels like that slice of bologna. "Samira," John continues, "will be hosting this wounded war hero at her farm. The farm in Connecticut that she lives on with her husband and child."
Parker has a look of dawning horror on her face. “Samira.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have a farm.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have a husband.”
“I’m aware.”
"You definitely don't have a child."
"Correct."

She had miscalculated and today is the first time she's seeing him since she told him to kiss her in the hospital parking lot on Thursday morning, and he, instead of doing as asked, ran away. Since he tucked tail and bolted with a laughably weak excuse to hole up in his perpetually-dark bedroom, police scanner on full volume if Samira had to guess. The memory tastes bitter and Samira can feel the frown she's wearing. Summary
If pressed to define it, Samira would describe her relationship with Jack Abbot in fairly simple terms. They are coworkers. Friends. Close friends, even, sure, she’d confidently say that. They’re certainly close, she thinks, and she’s definitely close right now, too, as she clenches her fingers tighter in Jack’s curls.

Summary
The silence in the apartment was a physical thing, thick and heavy, broken only by the sharp click of Samira’s heels on the hardwood floor. She didn’t look at Jack as she shrugged off her coat, letting it fall carelessly over the back of a chair. She could feel his anxious energy from across the room, a nervous heat radiating off him.
“Samira, come on,” he started, his voice too loud in the quiet. “It was nothing. She was just drunk.”
Samira turned slowly. The low light from the kitchen caught the gold in her eyes, making them look like polished amber.
“Nothing?” Her voice was a low, dangerous purr. “You stood there for ten minutes, Jack. Ten minutes while she put her hand on your arm, laughed at your jokes, leaned in so close I could smell her perfume from across the bar. And not once, not a single fucking time, did you say ‘I have a girlfriend.’”
She took a step toward him. “Your audacity is not the problem tonight. Your judgment is.”Series

Summary
Samira figured out she wanted to ask him while they were in the kitchen.
Jack was leaning against the counter, reading something on his phone, glasses on. He was in that focused, contained mode she remembered too well — the one that used to make the entire ward straighten instinctively.
She was barefoot. He was still wearing his shoes.
The imbalance hit her hard enough that she had to grip the back of a chair.
“Jack,” she said.
He looked up. “Yeah, baby?”
She hesitated.
“Do you remember how you used to correct me,” she said, “when I got sloppy because I was tired?”
His brow lifted slightly. “I remember not letting you get away with it.”
Her pulse jumped. “I liked that.”Series
