When Blackbeard thinks no-one is looking, he puts his hand to his head, presses his fingers into his temple.
And it makes sense, after what's happened. After what his crew did to him. Blows to the head linger. Sometimes they go bad long after the injury.

Izzy only hopes the ace up Frenchie's sleeve isn't the only trick he's got left in the box. He's close enough to hear tone, but not close enough to hear words, and the sharpness is becoming increasingly clear.

And it's not until they're leaving, an hour later than Stede thought he would be, talked out and yet with so much more to say, and they both grab their coats and they both stand in the street, that he thinks, oh no.
Because Ed is glancing down at Stede's lips, and he's rocking on his feet.
"So…" Ed starts. "I had a great time."
"Me too." That much is true. And now Ed is going to say something about the day not having to end just yet, or invite Stede back to his, or make a move, so Stede takes the reins. Steps forward, plants a dry kiss against the warmth of Ed's cheek, just above where his beard stops. "Safe journey home!" he says brightly, and turns on his heels.

And Stede has a penchant for romance novels, which only makes things worse - his boyfriend, Ed, the critically acclaimed historical fiction author, would surely lose all respect for him if he knew about his collection of frivolous smut, right?

In which Stede contorts himself into a pretzel to do a tightrope balancing act trying to be the person he thinks Ed wants to date. This is like 80% Stede’s introspection on his own insecurities (and he has almost every single anxiety someone could possibly have around sex and romance, except internalized homophobia. There are also NO references to or implications of child abuse or bullying in this fic.) - I know that Stede can be wildly overconfident sometimes but he can also have terrible self esteem and this fic is firmly in that end of his mood spectrum. Had to post on anonymous because this is a little too much like posting my own therapy sesh to the internet.
