Summary
A month after a brutal Fourth of July shift and a quiet fallout with Garcia, Trinity Santos does what she does best, throws herself into work and tries not to think about anything else.
Then a burn patient with dark red hair and an easy smile walks into her ER.
At first, the flirting feels harmless. The chance encounters feel like coincidence.
The problem is… she keeps showing up.

Summary
Trinity stumbled towards the bathroom, her joints popping and creaking. She tripped over a thrash bag that Whitaker was supposed to grab on his way out in the morning, barely regained her balance, closed and locked the door, then finally, finally dropped down beside the toilet, throwing up everything she had in her stomach.
She groaned. Redbulls were pricy as fuck.Trinity breaks down after an particularly unlucky day at the Pitt.

The words Trinity was thinking were out of her mouth before she could consider them. “I just didn’t want him to touch me again.”
“Again?” His voice was suddenly spiked with alarm, so much so that Trinity couldn’t quite decipher his confusion for a second longer than she should’ve. “He’s done this before?”
“No, not him,” she clarified, then raised her left hand to make the vague outline of a man in the air. “I mean. Him.”
Langdon looked at the blank space she had gestured to, like it might explain what she meant. He sounded wary as he said, “Okay, Santos.”

Summary
In a world of flight, Max was flightless.
In a society with wings, Max had none.
In an evolutionary advancement of airborne humans, Max was grounded.
---
“Do you think it’s possible to grow wings?”
Dustin looked a little bewildered when the question was spewed at him. Max didn’t really blame him. She didn’t even let him get a word in edgewise to her that morning, nor did she greet him or any of the others in their flock before she was spraying her needy curiosity out at him.
He blinked several times, opening and closing his Mandarin duck wings in a habit that meant that he was thinking. Then, he said, “Well…yeah, I think so. There have been some accounts of wingless people growing wings before, but it’s, like, a one in one million chance to happen.” He tilted his head at her. “Why do you ask?”
Max took a breath, then said, “I think I might be growing wings.”

Summary
“I mean-” Ellie licks her lips, swishes a bunch of pieces aside with the flat of her hand. “I mean, do you think, like, old women think Joel is attractive?”
A pregnant pause swells to fill the garage. Then Dina snorts and claws upright on the couch. She sways dizzily. “Oh, for sure.” Ellie squeaks, and Dina goes on, voice sing-songing, “And not just the old ones.”
Jesse says, slowly, bravely, “If we’re being honest, I think Joel’s attractive.”
Ellie falls backwards onto her ass, grunting at the impact. “Oh my God-”
“Tommy too,” Jesses adds, and Ellie throws a handful of puzzle pieces at him, shrieks:
“What?!”

“Ellie?”
She exhales inside her little pod, toes curling inside their woolen socks. Maybe if he thinks she’s still asleep –
A heavy hand lands on her knee, shaking gently. “Ellie, time to get up.”
Ellie groans, still not emerging. “Don’t wanna. ‘S too cold.”
A rough chuckle, the hand patting a little. “You’ll be warmer downstairs, I got the woodstove goin’. C’mon, darlin’, up and at ‘em.”
“No.”

"Maria's gonna be a little late tonight, she’s busy yelling at some kids that got caught jumping off the dam.”
Stunned, Joel eyes the puddle slowly forming under her feet with quiet horror. “But you were smarter than that, right?”
“Or faster?” Tommy cuts in hopefully.
“Both,” Ellie agrees. Then, with a wince, “But also…neither.”
A dangerous dare and a nasty sickness rock the Miller household on an already emotional week. Joel and Ellie learn that something always lurks deeper than the surface.

Don’t even need to be big, he’d told Sarah once. He tells Ellie that now, watches her face fold and unfold, a flower in bloom. Don’t even need to be big - because what a fucking privilege it is, he thinks, to be twenty years past the end of the world and still holding that dubious honor of cradling all the small parts of a little girl in his hand.

Two different girls. One dad.
Because even after the end of the world, parenting doesn't change all that much.

Jackson fits Joel like a glove. He joined the construction crew to do whatever contractors do. He makes small talk with the endless stream of strangers that approach them in the canteen when they’re trying to eat in peace. He’s full of amiable smiles and says shit like “after you, ma’am.”
Jackson fits Ellie like a glove too—like one of the hundreds of gloves they encountered on the road that didn’t fit her annoyingly small hands.
She doesn’t fit into normal things.

Summary
The tender fret in Joel's voice made Ellie feel the way she had on that half-wall outside Salt Lake City, like she’d accidentally stitched part of herself into him when she’d clumsily sewn up the hole in his belly. Between them it was all so much scar tissue and thread.
Deep in winter, she’d insisted he move carefully lest he ruin her efforts at mending. Now she demanded it of herself: try not to pull too hard.

Summary
“Maybe I should sleep here tonight,” Ellie confesses, reaching for her blanket and weakly wrapping it around her. “You can make sure my arm doesn’t peel off in the middle of the night.”
Joel’s face pales at the image; but, he still reaches forward and finishes wrapping the blanket more snuggly around her, tucking her in. “It’d be my greatest honor,” he says.
Ellie could easily poke back in jest, but when he presses a kiss to her temple she realizes that maybe his heart is as exposed and raw as hers. That’s maybe, wrapping her up in a blanket, feeding her soup, and trying to kiss the physical pain away really is his greatest honor. She doesn’t have any reason not to believe him.
After all, he’s always been a terrible liar.

Summary
Tommy gives him wounded looks the next day as he helps patch his brother up, shame like a wet blanket around him, suffocating him with each new mark he finds he left the night before. He hadn’t meant it, hadn’t meant to take his pain out on his brother, hadn’t meant to rip into the last family he’s got left, hadn’t meant to leave him limping and aching and bleeding when morning found them.
But the sound of Tommy’s mournful howl, a call that would never again be joined by a higher pitched one in return, had sent him over the edge he’d been clinging to until that point. He’d been angry, furious at his brother for what had felt like mockery, this call that would never have a response. Howls are meant to bring packs back together, after all. They’d both howled for Sarah plenty through the years, keeping track of a pup who was far too good at finding mischief.
He’d just wanted it to stop, the sound that should mean family.
It’s just the two of them now, after all.
