He hadn’t meant to look. Honest. He really hadn’t. But Shane was in the shower, and Hayden had picked up what he’d thought was HIS phone. In his defence, the phone in question had been tossed onto the bed closest to the window, which they both knew was always his bed. Both of their phones were the same model, and neither of them had bothered to change the ringtones from the default notification. He’d picked it up without a second thought and, well, had immediately realized his mistake. But it was too late. Hayden had seen the text chain.

Shane Hollander was an incredible hockey player. His shot accuracy was legendary. He was a fantastic strategist and play caller. He, despite Ilya's insistence otherwise, was one of the fastest on the ice. Still, none of that was what made Shane great.
What made him great was how he cared. Shane would do anything for his team - including get his hands a little dirty.

Shane Hollander can be bad, too. Five times Shane's gloves come off on the ice.

Okay, fuck, he really needs to get in contact with someone who knows something about whether or not his boyfriend is still breathing right now because he can't keep thinking like this. He squeezes his eyes shut, forcing the tears to go away and he calls his mom back, holding the phone up to his ear, hoping that she, somehow, has some kind of update for him; he knows that Ilya made Yuna her emergency contact a while ago, just in case, so if anybody is going to be able to tell him anything it’s going to be her.
Unless she hasn’t heard any news, unless he’s dead at the crash site and they can’t identify his body, unless they-
”He’s okay,” His mom says the moment she answers the phone, barely even letting it ring one time and, yeah, she really does know her son. She knows that that had to be the very first thing out of her mouth before anything, otherwise Shane would spiral.
(As if he hasn’t already been spiraling.)

OR, the plane from The Long Game actually crashes, Ilya gets injured, Shane rents a car to drive down to him, and he takes care of him.
