Summary
The thing about sex with Henry is, it’s never the same twice. Sometimes he moves easily, caught up in the rush, and other times he’s tense and taut and wants Alex to work him loose and take him apart. Ilya is frozen for a second, eyes flicking down to the pillow. David is offering. And his body still feels so heavy to hold up. He moves slowly, like he’s afraid something is going to jump out at him (which is kind of embarrassing), until he comes to rest on his side, his head against the soft pillow.
Without looking away from his book, David reaches over to pull Ilya’s blanket - which had traveled with him - up to rest just under his chin. He leaves his arm over Ilya, resting on his back. Holding him.
Ilya sniffles.

It’s like the ground drops out from beneath Ilya, and his heart falls from his chest. It tumbles past rock bottom, down to the cavern that shattered open inside of him on that night five years ago. The night when Ilya walked away from Hollander for the last time.
He can’t breathe.
