“For the first year of placement the agency requires a co-residing support adult. This person would live in the home for the first 12 months after placement. They're not replacing you as the parent. The requirement exists so if there's an emergency or adjustment difficulty there's another adult in the household who can provide immediate support.”
Boom’s expression stayed controlled. “I can provide a stable home alone.”
Aou had expected that. “I know. The policy is applied to all single applicants at your stage.”
“Regardless of the evaluation?”
“The evaluation determines whether placement can proceed. The condition determines how.”
Boom's jaw tightened, then released. “So it's not because of a specific concern about me. Or about Ceri.”
Kanya continued. “When an applicant doesn't have an existing support figure who meets the criteria, the agency can provide one. This placement has been overseen primarily by Aou. He's familiar with your evaluation and the child’s profile and has already established a dynamic with you. He's qualified to act as a facilitator under this policy.”
OR: Boom adopts Ceri. Aou is assigned by the agency to co-parent for the first year. Feelings ensue.

“So how long have you been doing this?”
Rome’s eyes stay on the screen. “DJing?”
“Crochet, Rome. Yes, DJing.”
That earns him another short look. “A while.”
Raffy waits. Rome doesn’t elaborate.
“A while,” Raffy repeats. “Very informative. You should do interviews.”
“I’m saving my best material.”
“For me?”
“For someone who asks better questions.”
Raffy huffs a laugh and shifts a little on his feet. “Okay, fine. Better question. What’s your excuse for making me work this hard?”
“Who said you had to work at all?”
Raffy could leave it alone. He really should. They have reached the good point, the one worth ending on. They know each other’s names now. The banter held. Rome didn’t dismiss him. That should be enough to carry forward. Something to pick up again once the set ends, or not at all, if he doesn’t feel like it.
But there’s a problem he didn’t account for.
He wants Rome to keep looking at him.

Boom’s father gestured toward him. “He’ll be your responsibility for the month.”
“I’m standing right here. You can stop discussing me like a badly chosen intern.”
Aou leaned down and picked up the crate again. “If you’re an intern, you can start making yourself useful tomorrow.”
Boom’s father rpulled out an envelope. “This has the contact information,” he called after Aou. “And the monthly payment we discussed.”
Boom snapped back around. “Payment? You’re paying him to babysit me?”
“We are compensating him for taking on the inconvenience.”
Boom gave a disbelieving laugh. “Inconvenience. Amazing. Really. I didn’t know I could be humiliated in new and exciting formats.”
Aou came back down the steps in time to hear that. He took the envelope from Boom’s father, tucked it without ceremony into the back pocket of his jeans and said, “Then this should be a very educational month for you.”
Boom stared at him. Aou stared back. There it was finally, not even hidden. The judgment. The impatience. The conclusion already reached.
Spoiled city idiot, that look said, in fluent silence.
Boom had one ready in return.
Stupid, rude country bastard.

“Can I ask you something?” he said.
Aou’s expression shifted - attentive, steady. “You just did.”
Boom rolled his eyes softly, stalling for half a second longer. The rain intensified, drumming against the glass.
“This thing,” he began, gesturing vaguely between them. “What is it?”
Aou looked at him for a long moment. “You tell me.”
Boom let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. “I don’t usually- ” He stopped, recalibrated. “I don’t want to guess wrong.”
Aou’s hand moved slightly on the couch cushion, close enough that Boom could feel the warmth radiating from his skin.
“I like being here,” Aou said quietly. “With you.”
The simplicity of it made Boom’s chest ache.
“I like you,” Boom replied, voice steadier than he felt. “In case that wasn’t obvious.”
Aou’s mouth curved again, softer this time. “It was moderately obvious.”
“Okay,” he said. “Well.”
He reached up, fingers brushing Aou’s cheek lightly, giving him enough space to pull away.
“Can I kiss you?”
Aou was still smiling and nodded. “Mm.”
OR: Aou and Boom meet, fall in love, are in love. Until they aren't. Maybe.

“That is exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about. That tone. That whole…” Fuse waved a hand vaguely in the air, as if Aou’s entire existence might be sketched there and rejected in one efficient motion. “That whole Aou-ness of it.”
Tun had started smiling in a way Fuse did not trust.
Tess folded his arms. “Describe the Aou-ness.”
“You know what I mean! He’s just… weird. I won’t ask him.”
Tess shut his notebook. “Okay. Then ask literally anyone else.”
“I will.”
“Who?”
Fuse crossed his arms. “Someone normal.”
Tun’s mouth twitched. “Define normal.”
“Not him.”
Tess looked infuriatingly calm. “You know, your only complaint so far is just that he’s weird. And the… Aou-ness.”
Fuse laughed. Then he kept laughing, which was always a bad sign.
OR: Aou has his quirks. Fuse notices them. He definitely doesn't like Aou though. Really.
