Summary
Halduron is easy, without a doubt, but he is not easy to pin down, to hold down, or to keep down.
It takes a steadier, heavier, and more consistent hand than anyone so far has ever had, he supposes. Hardly anyone is willing to use the force it takes, whether it’s about their personal preferences or his standing or a mix of both, and those who are have thus far lacked either the ethical code that such force necessitates or the nerve to keep from folding in the face of the most light, playful resistance. He knows both types well enough without testing the waters to know it’s not worth the metaphorical dice roll.
And maybe it’s something about Rommath, too. He can’t be sure and doesn’t particularly care either way, but it wouldn’t surprise him.

And maybe, on other occasions, without all these memories of nearly thirty birthdays spent in silence, he believes that.
Ratio has a typically miserable birthday. Aventurine gives him three presents to cheer him up.

“All in!” Aventurine laughs, catching Ratio’s eye. He winks, and it’s only because of the alcohol that’s swirling in his system that Ratio feels something tickle up his throat, something light and soft in response to Aventurine’s ridiculousness. He laughs, deep and soft and fond, and he turns to muffle it in his palm as it spills uncontrollably out of his mouth.
From his peripheral vision, he catches a glimpse of wide eyes before Aventurine turns abruptly back to the game. Where Ratio stands, he can see the way that the skin peaking through strands of blonde hair is stained a light pink. And really, is Ratio to be blamed for acting on the urge to feel the warmth under his own hands?

“Ah,” Aventurine said, rubbing his arm, “so that’s why they had us refresh all our vaccinations before this trip. We’re not in any danger of falling ill, are we? I’d hate to ruin such a nice vacation.”
“It’s unclear,” Ratio said. Aventurine side-eyed him, looking less relaxed now. But if those folktales had any merit to them at all, “more likely, no.”
They were approaching the town now, inclined turquoise shingles peeking out over the edges of the treeline. It seemed like every building here was overgrown with flowers—flowers burst from the vines on white stucco walls, bouquets hung from the bucket-laden stalls at every corner, and almost all the windows were decorated with boxes abundant with blooms.
“It’s beautiful, but,” he grimaced, voicing Ratio’s thoughts aloud, “a little morbid, isn’t it?”
To a scientist, mythology and fairy tales are simply veneers that warp and obscure the truth. And to a doctor, diseases are problems that can be solved with logic rather than love.
