He’d had a lot of time to think about it, in the months he was in hospital, about what he’d do once he was back with the 101st. The plan was to keep his head down, and keep away from Liebgott. David was going to be the most unremarkable infantryman who’d ever jumped out of a plane. Middle of the column. Back of the truck. That was the plan.

David had talked his way onto the patrol and while he was doing that he had felt like a canny operator, working his odds and reading the room. Of course he was just being led where Liebgott wanted him to go, but that was fine. There was a whole chain of men in charge of telling David what to do; at least Liebgott had transparent motives and knew what was going on.

In a brief rush of careless honesty, Gale said, “Got bucked off a horse when I was a kid. Probably that."

sharp & illuminating & precise. ow. shares my preoccupation with what i have been calling the vampire money.mp3 problem but with incredible depth & thoughtfulness & an intensely present lestat narratorial voice. anyway i am going to reread this like four times probably it is genius but it did make me need to get up & pace. my favorite part is lestat crying about judy blume but there are many memorable moments that i keep turning over in my mind, although generally they are painful (lestat being mean to louis about woody allen; lestat driving, outside his own body, terrifying). also i love lestat's glasses. story of all time
