sharp & illuminating & precise. ow. shares my preoccupation with what i have been calling the vampire money.mp3 problem but with incredible depth & thoughtfulness & an intensely present lestat narratorial voice. anyway i am going to reread this like four times probably it is genius but it did make me need to get up & pace. my favorite part is lestat crying about judy blume but there are many memorable moments that i keep turning over in my mind, although generally they are painful (lestat being mean to louis about woody allen; lestat driving, outside his own body, terrifying). also i love lestat's glasses. story of all time

The higher-ups call it Operation Watchtower, but to Bucky Barnes and the rest of the men on the ground, it's Operation Pestilence. Bucky doesn't mind that much. He was the one stupid enough to enlist, after all, alongside a bunch of other guys stupid enough to enlist. It's their own damn fault they're sitting in muddy holes in the ground getting malaria and eating whatever they can steal from the dwindling Japanese food caches.
Sometimes Bucky crunches his way through a tin of fish heads and gazes out at the sea, wondering if the US Army's forgotten them there on Guadalcanal, wondering if there's a US Army or a Navy even left to remember them or if the Japanese have won and nobody's bothered to let the GIs know. Then he decides fuck it and chucks his tin of fish heads at Foghorn because he's in the mood to wrestle and Foghorn's always up for a fight. They both come out of it laughing and a little bloody and feeling better because, hell, Bucky figured out pretty quick that living or dying is largely just a matter of chance, so why worry?

what is there to say? bucky at guadalcanal, in the mud, experiencing shell shock and expecting to die; bucky displaying exemplary courage, and being good despite the horror of everything; bucky being compassionate, and seeking what comfort he can find. bucky shipping home, and all the horrors still in store. i could not love him more if i tried, and the consummate care and attention to detail, historical and character, in this story does not in any way help me in my abject adoration. dammit.
