“Well,” her dad said. Layla heard the wry tone of his voice. “I made my choice.”
“Yeah, but…” Layla pulled back slowly, looking up at her dad. Her stupid, silly, creative dad, who always just needed a little push from the people he loved most. An idea formed in her head.
He groaned, recognizing the look in her eye. “What? What’s rattling around in that brain of yours?”
“Will’s single,” she said. “Aunt Nancy told me that he and Ty broke up.”
“Layla Grace Wheeler,” he said immediately, like he knew what she was going to say, “you will not, and I repeat: you will not, under any circumstances, do something to help us reconnect.”
She stared up at him. A million complicated emotions crossed his face as he stared back, face stony and determined. “But you love him.”
“Loved,” he corrected. “Past tense.”
She tilted her head and watched him.
