For the first few months after Derry, Richie had been barraging Eddie daily with the same kind of stupid shit he had as a kid, and Eddie had been responding. Richie’s life had been falling apart during this time, in the manner of a house that suddenly crumbled into dust years after termites had already hollowed out its foundation. But he and Eddie hadn’t talked about that.
They hadn’t talked about what was up with Eddie, either, which left Richie with few clues as to why when Eddie stopped responding. He had resorted to the obvious explanations, like Richie having made a joke about Eddie seeming sort of gay the first time they met after twenty years apart, or their having silently dry humped to mutual completion in the hammock once in high school, or Richie being generally a piece of shit, which was on its own a pretty good reason to terminate contact with him. That had been before Richie and Jess talked about what they were going to do in any terms more concrete than that they both hated what they had been doing. It was before Richie got to the place in Ensenada.
