Tell anyone she’s here? Arrest her herself? Hurt her? Take her broom away? Imprison her? Everything that could finish that sentence feels to Glinda like she’s only reminding Elphaba what she could do. “I promise you’re safe.”
Elphaba crashes onto Glinda’s balcony, and Glinda has to hide Elphaba from the world while she recovers.

“Let’s see,” Galinda says as she thinks on where to start. It has to be something smaller. There is no need to change Elphaba completely. Now that they are friends, Galinda can admit that she is quite pretty. Thinking hard, she tugs on her earlobe as a force of habit, which reminds her of the object placed behind her ear. The flower Fiyero gave her, the one that has been annoyingly stabbing at her head, how could she have forgotten? It is perfect.
“Maybe just this,” Galinda removes the flower from her hair and leans over Elphie who is looking up at her with interest (reverence). She places the pink flower behind Elphaba’s ear, the way Fiyero placed it behind hers. She smiles at the pink complimenting the green of the other girl’s skin, “Pink goes good with green.”

Elphie moves her hand away and replaces it with her own. Her touch is feather light. Nothing like Galinda’s own hand or her dream of how Elphie might touch her. Her touch on the strap is experimental as Elphie’s eyes focus on her face to see every minute change. Galinda tries to huff with annoyance, but instead it comes out like a choked moan. “You actually did it,” Elphie adds in wonder, before reassuring her, “I always believed you could do magic, but the form it has taken is most surprising.”
Having had enough of her teasing and needing to establish some type of control again, Galinda reaches out and grabs Elphie’s wrist, “Stop teasing me, Elphie.”

In careful, deliberate ways, Elphaba has found she and Galinda are not so different. In careful, deliberate ways, they have also learned from each other— what it means to be certain that you never need to be anyone but exactly who you are; what it means to know that there is someone who would never ask you to change. What it means when one day, you look in the mirror, and you see that you have anyway, because change is so very easy when someone loves you that much.
Which is to say, that in some fashion, Galinda, who has never been careful or deliberate, has barged her way into Elphaba’s quiet life and for once banished her own impulses in favor of new ones, in favor of the slow, connective kindness that can only be unearthed by the gentlest pair of hands.

It keeps her up at night because she misses him too, how he held her; it was nice to be held. She misses everything, and she knows she can never get any of it back. Everybody who knew her, really knew her, is gone.
