Feyre shows up to her second week at the Night Court critically ill, and against his better judgement, Rhys brings her to Velaris to care for her. Her recovery brings them closer together, and when he tells her about the mating bond—also against his better judgement—Feyre agrees to let him court her while she decides whether to accept it.

“Your home is… not what I expected.” This house was so different from Tamlin’s manor in Spring, with its stone floors and echoing hallways.
Rhys shrugged. “I like soft chairs and a warm fire, and to have a comfortable place to entertain my friends.”
“Do you even have friends?” He’d always been aloof Under the Mountain, pretending to prefer Amarantha’s company alone. But that had been a lie. What else about his persona there had been a facade?
“If I’d lived for five hundred years and hadn’t made any friends, I’d be doing something wrong, don’t you agree?”
Feyre hummed, lost in thought. For the first time, she considered that Rhys might have a vibrant life in the Night Court that he’d lost during Amarantha’s reign. That he had family and friends who had missed him. Maybe even a lover.

"Rhys," she said softly, worry evident in her voice, "you're scaring me. What's wrong?"
"Feyre, darling," he said, his voice low and controlled despite the turmoil within him. "As much as I’m delighted by the present circumstances, I need you to tell me, plainly and simply, why you're in my bed. Why you're... like this." He gestured vaguely at her form, and she wasn’t sure if he was referring to her being naked or her being High Fae.
Her smile returned, her hands sliding down to rest on his shoulders. “First of all, this is our bed. And second of all, because I’m your mate, you idiot. Did you hit your head last night or something?”

Rhys's drink is spiked by Keir in the Court of Nightmares and temporarily loses his memories back to when they were still UTM. He is pleasantly surprised when he wakes up with Feyre in his arms, kissing him and wishing him a happy birthday.
