Summary
The first night after Robby leaves, Dennis sleeps in Robby's bed.
He tries not to think about it. It doesn't help that the sheets smell like Robby's laundry detergent, a smell Dennis doesn’t even know is familiar until he lays on the bed and the ghost of Robby rises up around him.
Something in his gut clenches tight and doesn't let go. He curls in on himself, breathing in deep for a long time. Lets the shame wash through him, the violence of the want, and doesn't move until it ebbs.
§
Dennis gets worried about Robby after he leaves. He has a few drinks and makes a call. Robby comes back.

Summary
Dennis throws down his phone and says, “Don’t call them? The people who just want to help you? Don’t call the place that you were going to just, just abandon all by itself and not even think twice about how the department would survive, the only place that really knows you, that understands you and you were just going to leave me?”
Robby’s eyes go liquid. He covers his mouth with his hand.
“It,” Dennis says, too late.

Summary
The first couple of dollars that the machine ate up without remorse were an annoyance, something that made Dennis sigh and unzip his wallet without thinking about it to try again. By the time that the vending machine had eaten seven whole dollars, in coins, and Dennis didn’t have anything to show for it, he was close to thumping his forehead against the cool glass and hoping he could derive some sort of enjoyment or nourishment from simply just looking at the colourful packages as they remained firmly in their coils.
He didn’t often carry coins. Those were his last few dollars and he was woefully aware that somebody had offhandedly mentioned that the staffroom vending machine destroyed notes, so he wasn’t going to be getting a soda, a bag of chips or anything else that might settle his belly from the incessant grumbling it was doing.
~
5 times + 1 that Robby buys something for Dennis and makes him feel like he's about to keel over, right there and then.
