A series of missing scenes and a partial rewrite; to repair Stanley's psyche, to let the erebus surgeons survive as a couple (took them two years, it's smouldering), to save Tunnbaq (my darling darling bear), and to eventually ask the question: what is worse, suffering or death?
If I have to summarise, the story's the katabasis of one soul and the anabasis of two.

Summary
A playing with the plot. Grima leaves Saruman's service before the battle of Pelennor fields and meets up with the Rohirrim. The usual 'must prove that he is a somewhat vaguely better man than he was before' begins. There are some heroics, some musings, some temptations (of all sorts), and lots of purple prose.

Summary
“We’re not in the market for paid killers, I’m afraid,” James says. He means it to come out humorous, to find some charisma left in the sea of grief he’s still feeling. It comes out a little faint instead.
“That’s lucky,” says the rider. “I’m not a killer.”
Dundy makes a slightly frustrated noise. “Well, we aren’t in the market for gunfighters, either. You’re looking in the wrong place.”
“Funny. As I hear it, you already got one.”
The rider is still watching James. Waiting for him to reply, James realizes, which makes him freeze all over again.
He takes a breath.
“How much are you asking for?”
A stranger rides into town. He calls himself Francis.

Summary
I’ll not have a picture, he thinks, gazing grimly at James’ drawn, damaged face. I’ll not have a miniature to tuck inside my breast pocket, or a sketch made on a winter’s evening by the fireside. It will be my own burden to remember him, until such a time as this cursed land takes me, too.
Twenty five men return to England. For Francis, this means making a poor job of keeping James from scuttling his career, and working out what a sea captain might do with himself in the absence of a ship.
